Weekend Tracking: 'Factory Girl' and 'Miss Potter' Lead a Pack of PTA Possibles; 'Museum' Should Top $45 million

by Steve Mason

There are no new wide releases this week. Instead, we got a limited release (three screens) of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Paramount) on Wednesday (Dec. 27), and nine more specialty films opening on just a handful of screens Friday (Dec. 29).

MOVIE MARKET: Get On 'Fast Track' and 'Bridge to Terabithia'

by Steve Mason

Bob and Harvey Weinstein have fast-tracked Fast Track (MGM/Weinstein), but because of its Dec. 29 exclusive engagements, you've got to grab it right away. Pan's Labrynth (Picturehouse) looms as a great Ultimate Moguls sleeper, and you can build your spring slate around Bridge To Terabithia (Buena Vista). Horror flicks Blood & Chocolate and Captivity won't scare up much box office, and six release date changes mean you won't feel lucky with Lucky You (Warner Bros). It's all in this week's Movie Market.

CELEBRITY LOVE: Night At The Middle Of The Pack

by Mike Ogle

Final 4-Day Box Office & PTA Results: The Winners are 'Museum,' 'Dreamgirls,' 'Rocky,' Children of Men;' Losers are 'Marshall,' 'Nativity,' 'Blood Diamond' and 'Good German'

by Steve Mason

The 4-Day Box Office and PTA races are now settled, and the major surprise is Dreamgirls (Paramount/Dreamworks). We knew it would be big, but I'm told that distribution execs had penciled in $4 million for Christmas Day. Instead, the musical delivered just under $9 million, and now it has a chance to deliver $50 million for the Christmas Day through New Year's Day 8-day period.

'Rocky Balboa': Holiday Upset -- Stallone Delivers the Perfect Finale

by Steve Mason

I'm a sucker for Rocky. I saw the original film when I was 11 years old, and it stayed with me for weeks. My brother and I perfected the one-arm pushups, drank raw eggs, and, if there'd been a side of beef handy, I'm sure we would have spent long hours beating it into submission.

4-Day Estimates : MUSEUM at $42.9 million, PURSUIT $19.8, ROCKY $16.8; DREAMGIRLS Should Grab $4.6 on X-Mas Day

by Steve Mason

Christmas Eve is never a big movie day as the multiplexes go quiet after about 5pm. It’s the annual calm before the storm. It seems as though everyone goes to the movies on Christmas Day, and the film business always enjoys a huge windfall in the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

CELEBRITY LOVE: Boom, Shake the Room

by Mike Ogle

Who says celebrities are out of touch with the common folk? That they live in their Hollywood bubbles, completely unaware of what you, Joe Schmoe out there, are thinking, are wanting? And worse, that they don't even care what you want, even though it's people like you who pay their salaries. Who says such things? Certainly not all of us here at FantasyMoguls.com. We've got ESPN's Will Carroll from "

The Fantasy Show." And Will is one celebrity who knows what you like.

Early Weekend Estimates Show MUSEUM with $35 million; ROCKY #3, SHEPHERD #4, MARSHALL #6

by Steve Mason

Some analysts had Ben Stiller's Night At the Museum (Fox) scoring as much as $45-$50 million for the 4-day holiday weekend. My Friday Weekly Tracking column called for $34.5 million, and I just about nailed it. After a $12.1 million Friday, studio estimates as of Saturday morning for the family comedy are for $35 million.

MUSEUM #1, PURSUIT #2, ROCKY #3; DREAMGIRLS to Lead PTA Field

by Steve Mason

There is no question about which movie will dominate the 4-day Christmas weekend. Ben Stiller, who starred in the #1 Christmas movie of 2004 Meet the Fockers, is back in Night At the Museum (Fox). It’s a perfect PG-rated family comedy, and he’s got Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson along for the ride.
