New York Film Critics: United 93 Edges The Queen
by Steve Mason
United 93 (Universal) was a Spring release and met with a box office thud – just $31 million – despite some of the best reviews of the year. I love the movie, but it was harrowing to sit through. From Director Paul Greengrass, this documentary-style telling of the heroic passengers that brought down the fourth 9/11 plane in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania feels as real as the events that inspired it. The New York Film Critics have thrust United 93 into the Oscar race today by naming it the Best Picture of 2006.
In what was described as a “dogfight,” United 93 edged The Queen (Miramax) for the top award with The Departed (Warner Bros) finishing 3rd. The Queen still managed 2 wins: Best Actress Helen Mirren and Best Screenplay Peter Morgan. Martin Scorsese won Best Director for The Departed, Forest Whitaker was named Best Actor for The Last King of Scotland (Fox Searchlight), Jennifer Hudson picked up Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls (Paramount/Dreamworks) and Jackie Earle Haley scored Best Supporting Actor for his pedophile role in Todd Field’s Little Children (New Line).
