UPDATED 3-DAY ESTIMATES: 'Blades' Revised Upward to $40 mil; All-Time 2nd Best Ferrell Opening; 'Robinsons' Now Distant 2nd at $25 mil

by Steve Mason

Will Ferrell and Jon Heder have officially grabbed the box office gold. Late last night my studio sources were forecasting a narrower-than-expected weekend victory for Blades of Glory (Paramount) over Disney’s Meet the Robinsons, but it now appears to be the blowout I called for in my original weekend tracking article on Thursday. Blades delivered an impressive $12 million on Friday, and it will likely score an estimated $40 million by Monday morning. Meanwhile, Robinsons falls into the “mildly disappointing” category despite a boost from the 600+ locations offering the animated film in Disney Digital 3D. Based on a popular children’s book, the family pic scored $8 million on its opening day, which, after a nice weekend matinee bounce, should translate to a 3-day of approximately $25 million.

EXCLUSIVE EARLY 3-DAY ESTIMATES: 'Blades' to Win w/$36.5 million; All-Time 2nd Best Ferrell Opening; 'Robinsons' 2nd with $30 mil

by Steve Mason

Will Ferrell and Jon Heder will hold off the hard-charging Robinsons for a narrower-than-expected weekend victory. Blades of Glory (Paramount) has delivered an impressive $13 million today (Friday, 3/30), and it will likely score an estimated $36.5 million by Monday morning. Meanwhile, Meet the Robinsons (Buena Vista) may be getting a boost from the 600+ locations offering the animated film in Disney Digital 3D. Based on a popular children’s book, the family pic scored $8 million on its opening day, which, after a nice weekend matinee bounce, should translate to a 3-day of approximately $30 million.

Ch-ch-ch-changes: New Message Boards, April Launch

by FantasyMoguls.com

Hey, guys! I have a few Fantasy Moguls updates and wanted to let you all know what to expect this week (and why), and what will be happening over the next few weeks.

As some of you know, we're working to build out the site and the gaming platform -- what's currently live is mostly what we launched with in October, then we added Weekend Moguls Over/Under more recently.

EARLY ROUGH NUMBERS: 'Robinsons' Stronger Than Expected

by Steve Mason

It’s very early, and these numbers are very preliminary, but there may be an upset brewing at America's multiplexes. A studio source is telling me that both Blades of Glory (Paramount) and Meet the Robinsons (Buena Vista) are opening strongly, but Robinsons may have the advantage.

WEEKEND TRACKING UPDATE: 'Blades' Projects As Weekend Winner Over 'Robinsons' with more than $40m

by Steve Mason

As of Tuesday, I was calling for both Blades of Glory (Paramount) and Meet the Robinsons (Buena Vista) to finish this weekend in the $30-$40 million range. My studio sources have filled me in on the latest industry tracking, and I'm now prepared to project Blades as the weekend winner.

EARLY WEEKEND PREVIEW: 'Blades' to Edge 'Robinsons'; 'Lookout' w/Great Reviews, but Little Business

by Steve Mason

It's a Blades vs. Robinsons shootout this weekend (March 30-April 1) at America's multiplexes. Paramount's Blades of Glory allows funnyman Will Ferrell to lampoon yet another world. He's taken on TV news (Anchorman), NASCAR (Talladega Nights) and now the world of figure skating. It's hard to overestimate Ferrell's appeal with men.

TIP OF THE WEEK: (Ultimate Moguls) What are IMDb User Ratings?

by Mister Informative

Greetings, Moguls, and welcome to our newest weekly feature. I hope you've been enjoying what I like to think of as being The Best (Darn) Movie Game Period. Many of you are already Fantasy Moguls experts, in which case you probably don't need to keep reading. My purpose in the Moguls-verse is to enlighten the uninformed -- to help people who are new to the game make sense of it all. Each week I'll tackle a point of game strategy that may be confusing to Fantasy Moguls rookies. Some weeks, we'll look at Box Office Moguls, and some weeks our focus will be on Ultimate Moguls. Oh, and before I forget ... call me Mister, uh, Informative.

FINAL 3-DAY ESTIMATES: 'TMNT' wins with $25.5 mil; '300' still strong with $20.5; Subpar showings for 'Shooter', 'Mimzy', 'Hills 2', 'Reign'

by Steve Mason

The all-new, supercharged computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Warner Bros.) is off to an excellent start at the box office with a haul of $25.5 million for its opening weekend. Early Friday, one studio source put the number at $21-24 million, but by Friday night, my contacts were calling for more than $30 million. In the end, TMNT scored $8.7 million on Friday, $9.4 million on Saturday and an estimated $7.35 million on Sunday which is more than enough to coast to an easy weekend win past 5 other new films entering the marketplace along with the third weekend for 300 (Warner Bros.). The Turtles are playing well with today’s kids, but the film is also scoring well with Males Under 25 who grew up on Donatello and pals.

The all new super-charged computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Warner Bros) is off to an explosive start at the box office with a staggering $9 million on opening day, and as much as an estimated $32.5 million for its opening 3-day weekend.
