FINAL WEEKEND TRACKING: 'Pirates' Sinking?; 'Knocked Up' Should Score a Strong 2nd-place Finish; 'Mr. Brooks' in Single Digits

by Steve Mason

This week during an appearance on the Reelz Channel, I was asked if I thought if Knocked Up (Universal) could knock off Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista). The answer is a resounding no, but it might be closer than anyone expects.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Who Are Shrek's Heirs in the Feature Films for Families Market?

by Mister Informative

Greetings, Moguls! Mr. Informative here, using phone books as a booster seat in order to provide my latest Tip of the Week, and my first geared toward our second season of the new salary cap method, from June through August. Given the ogre-sized success of Shrek the Third, which crossed the $200 million threshold this weekend, the time is ripe for a look at the rest of the summer's family films. Can any other offering match Shrek's success? I say, "No friggin' way." Some of them, however, will be plenty successful in their own right.

MONDAY UPDATE: 'Pirates' plunder is $115M (3-day), $142M (4-day) and $156.5M (5-day); Captain Jack may not reach $300M!

by Steve Mason

As I reported Sunday night, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista) didn't tail off as much as the industry expected on Sunday. My number Sunday night was $32.12 million and the studio estimate this morning (Monday) is 5 percent higher at $33.83 million. Here are the Sunday Studio Estimates released Monday morning.

EARLY SUNDAY ESTIMATES: 'Pirates 3' dips 16 percent for an estimated $32.12M Sunday; 'Shrek' passes $200M and 'SM3' crawls past $300M

by Steve Mason

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista) capped off a somewhat underwhelming three-day weekend with an estimated $32.12 million on Sunday. That appears to be a tick better than the expected $31.3 million and a likely 16 percent drop from Saturday's take. If the Sunday number holds up, P3: AWE will score a $113.32 million three-day haul. That's No. 5 all-time, behind Spider-Man 3 (Sony), $151 million; last summer's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men's Chest (Buena Vista), $135.6 million; last weekend's Shrek the Third (Dreamworks/Paramount), $121.6 million; and 2002's Spider-Man (Sony), $114.8 million.

SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE: 'Pirates' with $112M 3-day; 4-day Memorial Day weekend record will fall, but 'P3: AWE' may have trouble getting to $300M domestic

by Steve Mason

Captain Jack Sparrow's ship did not sink, but it's definitely taking on water. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista) added $38.2 million on Saturday, 7.6 percent less than my early estimate of $41.3 million released Saturday night. That represents an 11 percent drop from Friday's $43 million. Here are the Saturday Studio Estimates released Sunday morning, followed by my Exclusive FantasyMoguls.com Early Saturday Estimates (released Saturday night) and the percentage that those estimates missed by for each film in the Top 10.

SATURDAY ESTIMATES: 'Pirates 3' steady with an estimated $41.3M; 'Shrek the Third' w/$20.6M

by Steve Mason

Captain Jack has sailed to a very solid, steady Saturday. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Buena Vista) generated an estimated $41.3M Saturday, only a 4% drop from it’s Friday haul of $43M setting a course for a new 4-day Memorial Day weekend record. If the number holds up, P3: AWE’s Saturday will be the all-time #11 single gross following Friday’s all-time 10th-best take.

SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE: 'Pirates' softer-than-expected!; P3 Friday only #10 all-time single day gross; 3-day of $105.5M, far behind 'SM3' and 'Shrek 3'; 'AWE' still headed for 4-day of $127.5M and 4 1/2-day of $144.5M

by Steve Mason

SATURDAY AM: “Aaaaaaaargh!” That’s probably what Disney execs are saying this morning. One of the three major May sequels was bound to disappoint, and it appears that it’ll be Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

EXCLUSIVE EARLY ESTIMATES: 'Pirates' disappoints! 'AWE' w/$40M Friday; $105.5M 3-day; $127.5M 4-day; Estimated 4 1/2-day take of $144.5M

by Steve Mason

FRIDAY PM: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Buena Vista) is a great, big, monstrous hit, but fanboys may be a little let down by its Friday take of an estimated $40M. This is a terrific number, but it may not even rate as one of the all-time top 10 single day grosses, lagging far behind the May 4 opening day of Spider-Man 3 (Sony), last summer’s Pirates 2 opening day and SM3’s May 5 opening Saturday.

THE SCORECARD: Average of 10 "expert" sources call for 'Pirates' 4-day of $168M; 'Shrek' forecast calls for $78M

by Steve Mason

Each week, we round up the weekend box-office predictions of the so-called experts, including yours truly. The old show business adage "Nobody knows anything" is in full effect because, even by studying and poring over the tracking, the release plan, the screen counts and the reviews, and even after seeing the films, the moviegoing public is still too fickle and unpredictable for this to be a science rather than an art.
