WEEKEND ESTIMATES: 'Halloween' has Slow Sabbath but Still All-Time Labor Day Champ with $31.32M; 'Superbad' in Second; 'Balls' Edges 'Bourne' for Third; 'Nines' Wins PTA Battle

by Steve Mason

SUNDAY NIGHT: Michael Myers is the new Labor Day box-office king, but he's bleeding after dropping another 19 percent on Sunday. Halloween (MGM/Weinstein) still managed a $6.94 million day and closed the book on a three-day scare of $26.46 million, but its projected four-day of $31.32 million is much softer than you would expect after almost $11 million on Friday.

THE SCORECARD: Average of Seven "Expert" Sources Calls for $22.12M for 'Halloween; 'Superbad' in Second; 'Balls' Small with $12.21M; 'Death Sentence' Already Dead

by Steve Mason

Each week, we round up the weekend box-office predictions of the so-called experts, including yours truly. The old show business adage "Nobody knows anything" is in full effect because, even by studying and poring over the tracking, the release plan, the screen counts and the reviews, and even after seeing the films, the movie-going public is still too fickle and unpredictable for this to be a science rather than an art. Hopefully, this weekly feature will keep me — and the rest of the box office "authorities" — humble and be instructive for Fantasy Moguls players.

DANCES WITH THE ARTHOUSE: Movie Stars Muscle in on the Specialty Scene as Rutger Hauer and Jon Heder Get Trampled by Viggo Mortenson, Michael Douglas and Keira Knightley

by Indie Jones

Hello everyone, and welcome to the warm arthouse corner of Fantasy Moguls. For the second week in a row (can you believe it?) I take off my hat and put down my whip to discuss those little films that many moviegoers wish they could see, but, because they don't live near specialized theaters, can only bang their heads on the walls and scream, "Why can't I see this film?! I want to see this film now!!" Of course, some people bang their heads just for the fun of it, but, well, everyone's gotta find something to do to fill their weekends ...

BARD'S EYE VIEW: The Ten Commandments of Actors with Three Names (Billy Bob Thornton, Tommy Lee Jones, Evan Rachel Wood, etc.)

by Shrykespeare

Greetings Fellow Moguls, and welcome once again to Bard's Eye View, the mountaintop from which I, your humble prophet, dispense my weekly sermon regarding future cinematic developments. Whether you are a regular member of our ever-growing throng, or a newly-indoctrinated disciple, I bid you welcome. With these Twenty Commandments, I proclaim to thee ... (bolt of lightning, stone shattering) Um, with these Ten Commandments, I proclaim to thee ... (Wink.)

TIP OF THE WEEK: Trick or Treat, Smell Mr. Informative's Feet

by Mister Informative

Greetings, Moguls, and welcome to the latest Tip of the Week. August-October leagues are now underway, and September-November leagues are already forming, so October movies could end up being crucial cogs in the march towards victory for many Fantasy Moguls players. Picking the right film is a treat indeed, but choosing an underperforming movie almost feels like your house getting toilet papered by a gang of hoodlums, or a bully stealing your bucket o' goodies, or living in a neighborhood of dentists and getting nothing but toothpaste in your treat basket, or getting a whole handful of anise (which is right next to meekrob in my [and Eric Cartman's] book) when there's a bowl of Snickers sitting right there ...

'Superbad' gets $6.5M Saturday and $18M for the weekend, now the No. 3 comedy and No. 2 R-rated film of 2007; 'Bourne' and 'Rush Hour' finish second and third; "Bean' w/$10M; 'War' w/$9.6M; 'Nanny' and 'Champ' disappoint; Leo's '11th Hour' stalls

by Steve Mason

The raunchy "nerdfest" Superbad (Sony) has coasted to an easy weekend win, becoming only the third summer movie to win back-to-back weekends (joining Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End). Produced by Judd Apatow and written by Knocked Up star Seth Rogen, this teen comedy, budgeted at just $18 million, stormed to another $6.52 million on Saturday, and its second weekend will hit $18.07 million for a new cume of $68.6 million.

No. 1 'Superbad' adds $5.67M Friday and targets $18.15M for the weekend; 'Bourne' and "Rush Hour 3' to finish 2-3; 'Bean' No. 4 w/$10M; 'War' No. 5 w/$9.7M; 'Nanny' and 'Champ' disappoint

by Steve Mason

The raunchy Judd Apatow-produced teen comedy Superbad (Sony) will, as expected, hold off flock of "lame duck" new releases for a second consecutive weekend win. Written by Knocked Up star Seth Rogen and directed by Greg Mottola (The Daytrippers), Superbad added another $5.67 million on Friday, bringing its eight-day cume to $56.2 million. I'm targeting an $18.15 million three-day, which would be an estimated 45 percent weekend drop.

DANCES WITH THE ARTHOUSE: New Columnist Flies You to the 'Moon,' Contemplates Life in 'The Bubble'

by Indie Jones

Welcome everyone ! The brand newest column of Fantasy Moguls is right here, humbly waiting for you. As summer fades away, and with it the wave of blockbusters, there's more space left in your studio for what are traditionally considered the more "serious" films of the year. The truth is, "serious" films are in theaters all year long, but there is a period when they are more eagerly awaited and given more space in the theaters, and that time is coming with the month of September. Even if some of these films, however, will be given wide releases in the next few months, others (most of them actually) will still be viewable by only a few lucky buffs and geeks.

BARD'S EYE VIEW: Six-Shooters or Semi-Automatics and Other Perplexing Issues

by Shrykespeare

Hello, hello, and welcome to the latest chapter of Bard's Eye View, the place to come for the cinematic equivalent of hot stock tips. I, your humble broker, will outline for you possible bull and bear markets, help you avoid catastrophic investments, and attempt to make sense out of this thing that we call "box office augury." Whether you are a full-time investor looking to expand your portfolio, or a part-time day trader hoping to make a quick profit, I bid you welcome. Like most stocks, predicting box office numbers can be a bit of a crap shoot, but if it's not your thing, I hear pork bellies are on the up. ("Shut up, Winthorp.") (Wink.)
