SUNDAY MORNING: Nicolas Cage's National Treasure: Book of Secrets (Disney) was down on Saturday from its enthusiastic Friday opening. The return of treasure hunter Ben Gates added an estimated $16.9 million (PTA: $4,410). Considering that Monday is Christmas Eve, and a holiday for most Americans, the question now becomes how the weekend box office will play out.
My sources are telling me that today (Sunday) will play more like a Saturday, but to keep in mind that many moviegoers are wrapping up their Christmas shopping. Given that, I am penciling in a 5 percent Sunday drop, which would put Treasure right at $50 million for the three-day run-up to Christmas Eve and Christmas. That's down from my original estimate, released Friday night ($59.2 million — scroll down for additional details), but will still mark the best opening weekend of Cage's career.
I Am Legend (Warner Bros.) continues to hold up quite well, with an estimated $12.9 million on Saturday, and a likely $35.58 million for the weekend. The surprise blockbuster Alvin and the Chipmunks (20th Century Fox) is third for the day with $11.2 million, and also for the three-day, with $30.5 million. That lifts the live action/animation hybrid past the $75 million mark in domestic sales.
Saturday saw mixed results for the other big openers. The Tom Hanks/Julia Roberts vehicle Charlie Wilson's War (Universal), directed by Mike Nichols, was fourth on Saturday, but failed to catch Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Dreamworks/Paramount) in the weekend race. Charlie was up 36 percent to $3.8 million on its second day, while the clearly front-loaded Sweeney slumped by 11 percent to $3.4 million. The Tim Burton-directed Broadway musical adaptation will have banked $10.1 million by Sunday night, compared to the Aaron Sorkin-written political yarn, which will finish the weekend with $9.9 million.
P.S. I Love You (Warner Bros.), with $2.26 million Saturday and a three-day of $6.64 million, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (Sony), with $1.51 million on day two and a $4.3 million weekend, remain huge disappointments. Meanwhile Fox Searchlight's Juno is huge at its 304 with an estimated three-day of $3.35 million, good for tenth place.
It's very quiet on the specialty front, but Jessica Simpson's Blonde Ambition (First Look) remains an embarrassment for Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo's current "squeeze." The film had a PTA of just $62 on its eight screens in Texas on Saturday. That equates to about eight tickets sold at each location, and the movie will finish the weekend with $1,251 and a three-day PTA of $227. That's a disaster for the woman being called the "Yoko Ono of the Dallas Cowboys."

FRIDAY NIGHT: The role of treasure hunter Ben Gates has vaulted Nicolas Cage to his single best day ever at the box office, and he will also receive an early Christmas present: his all-time best opening weekend. National Treasure: Book of Secrets (Disney) has racked up an estimated $18.5 million on its opening day, and the sequel to the 2004 hit is headed for a projected $59.2 million by Monday morning. It's been a good year for Cage with both Ghost Rider and Book of Secrets (although his April film Next was a monstrous flop, with a cume of just $18 million domestic). Today's performance eclipses his previous single day best of $17.3 million on February 17 of this year with Ghost Rider.
ALL-TIME TOP 5 BOX OFFICE DAYS FOR NICOLAS CAGE
1. Dec. 21, 2007 — National Treasure: Book of Secrets, $18.5 million (Estimate)
2. Feb. 17, 2007 — Ghost Rider, $17.3 million
3. Feb. 16, 2007 — Ghost Rider, $15.4 million
4. Nov. 20, 2004 — National Treasure, $14.5 million
5. Nov. 29, 2004 — National Treasure, $12.9 million
6. Nov. 27, 2004 — National Treasure, $12.68 million
7. Feb. 18, 2007 — Ghost Rider, $12.63 million
8. Nov. 19, 2004 — National Treasure, $11.1 million
9. June 7, 1996 — The Rock, $10.2 million
10. June 6, 1997 — Con Air, $9.9 million
Despite a decidedly lukewarm critical response (it has a rating of just 35 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes), Book of Secrets will likely finish with just shy of $60 million, marking the best three-day of Cage's career and topping the opening weekend of the first Treasure film by 40 percent.
ALL-TIME TOP 10 NICOLAS CAGE OPENING WEEKENDS
1. National Treasure: Book of Secrets — $59.2 million (Estimate)

If the number holds, Book of Secrets will deliver the all-time No. 5 December opening, coming in ahead of recent year-end blockbusters like King Kong, the first Lord of the Rings movie and Meet the Fockers. After a disastrous September and October, the movie business rebounded nicely in November, and now, 2007 is going out with a bang. Treasure joins December releases I Am Legend and Alvin and the Chipmunks on the list.
ALL-TIME TOP 10 DECEMBER OPENING WEEKENDS
1. I Am Legend — $77.2 million
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King — $72.6 million

9. Alvin and the Chipmunks — $44.3 million
10. Ocean's Twelve — $39.1 million
Meanwhile, last week's top two performers are showing no signs of slowing down. Will Smith's I Am Legend grabbed another $13.25 million on Friday, and it should finish the weekend with an estimated $41 million. That would give the third film version of Richard Matheson's seminal novel the fifth-best 10-day gross of the year.

8. The Simpsons Movie — $128 million
9. Ratatouille — $109.5 million
10. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer — $97.4 million
The animation/live action mix of Alvin benefited from the fact that lots of school kids are already off for Christmas, and the family film generated a very chippy $9.15 million on Friday. Fox's critters are headed for a very strong three-day of $32 million, representing a drop of less than 30 percent from opening weekend.
Dreamworks's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street opened at just 1,249 locations, but it has still managed to finish fourth on Friday with an estimated $3.95 million and a PTA of $3,163. Reviews are nothing short of spectacular for the Tim Burton adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical with Oscar nominees Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in the leads. Still, there was real concern at Dreamworks about how to sell the movie.
In some neighborhoods, this is a very bloody adaptation of a classic Broadway musical, and in others, it's a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp horror film with musical numbers. It seems that the Dreamworks marketing team has been able to "thread the needle" by selling to both audiences. This one-of-a-kind movie experience should wrap up the weekend with $12.1 million, which makes it the sixth-strongest opening of Tim Burton's career.

Charlie Wilson's War was No. 5 Friday, and it'll likely hold that spot when weekend tallies are in, but Universal has botched this release. Tracking indicates that the appeal for this movie is with Females 25 Plus, and that audience is busy with last-minute Christmas shopping this weekend. Inexplicably, somebody at Universal decided to push the release from Christmas Day to Dec. 21, and the result is completely underwhelming. Charlie appears to have generated a tick over $3 million on Friday, and its three-day weekend should finish at about $9.7 million.
When you've got a well-reviewed female-skewing movie with five Golden Globe nominations, an Aaron Sorkin script, Mike Nichols directing and box-office sure things like Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts in lead roles, $9.7 million is a sorry weekend number. In fact, for Hanks, it marks only the 17th-best opening of his career, behind such gems as Turner & Hooch and The 'Burbs and just ahead of the immortally bad Joe Versus the Volcano.

Charlie doesn't look much better on Julia's resume. If the $9.7 million number holds, it will be just the 20th-best opening of her legendary career, just ahead of box office turkey Dying Young.
The Hilary Swank romantic comedy P.S. I Love You is a misfire with only $2.25 million on its opening day. It'll likely limp to a disappointing $7.2 million weekend. The distinction of "biggest bomb of the weekend," however, goes to Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (Sony), which crawled to $1.4 million on Friday and, despite a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) for John C. Reilly, the Judd Apatow-produced and written comedy is targeting only $4.25 million for the three-day.
Three new specialty releases opened to dismal results. Sony Classics's Steep, a spectacular extreme skiing doc, fared best with a $515 PTA at 17 locations on opening day. The Jessica Simpson vehicle, Blonde Ambition (First Look), which opened at eight locations in Texas, had an embarrassing $48 PTA at eight locations on Friday. While Dallas Cowboy fans complain of a "Jessica jinx" after she showed up to support quarterback boyfriend Tony Romo on Sunday and the Cowboy lost ugly to Philadelphia, it seems as though the whole state of Texas is shunning her and her otherwise straight-to-video movie. Ambition could finish with a weekend cume of less than $1,200.

Thanks for the early #s, Steve... too bad about Walk Hard 'cause it was probably the best movie of the bunch. (After Sweeney )

Have Flakes and Steep reported their numbers?

In your top 10 - 10 day totals, where is Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End? I believe it made around 200M in 10 days.

LOL, Mase... Hey, we Texans know, the Curse of Jessica is REAL... No doubt, though, last week's loss to the Eagles WAS dog-ugly. Let's hope that Romo can keep her away from the 'Boys' last two games against Carolina and the despised 'Skins.
Great article, as always.
I remain, as always...
Nico.

P.S. I Love You was a very good movie. The acting was excellent. The critics are the ones who hurt this movie. Theater was packed and the response from the audience was good.

I am just amazed at the poor result at Walk Hard. It's probably the funniest film of the year (funnier than Superbad) and yet, people avoid it to see sequels and remakes. People are probably waiting for the longer edit on DVD (many scenes were edited for time).

The movie sucked. My sister is such a horrible actress. I will get her to stop going to the Cowboys games. Sorry Dallas.

Not surprised by NT2 and Sweeney being softer for Saturday since they both had midnight showings the day before which helped their overall Friday numbers.

So glad I dumped Walk Hard in time. Just goes to show you shouldn't crown a king (Apatow) until he produces a few more than 5 movies.
Speaking as a sports fan, a hot streak is just that, a streak. I guess he's not a garunteed hit a-la Will Smith who's been doing it for YEARS!

i guess walk hard just opened at a horrible time....knocked up opened a weekend or two before the may monsters (i think??) and superbad had no competition in august or whenever....my point is, apatow's had some amazing movies put out on clear weekends, and they've racked up the BO, but he just isn't ready to take on a big weekend filled with movies....

yah, but both P.S. I Love You and Walk Hard will make a little more money in the long run, and might even make more money next weekend, holiday films generally make money over the Christmas holidays and the first few weeks of Janruary, We are Marshell made 8 Million in the first weekend , but adventually made 40 million.
