EARLY VALENTINE'S DAY ESTIMATES: 'Step Up' and 'Jumper' in a Virtual Dead Deat; 'Gold' No. 3; 'Definitely, Maybe' Soft at $2.8M; 'Spiderwick' w/$2.2M and Waiting for Weekend Surge in Family Biz!

by Steve Mason

THURSDAY NIGHT: Step Up 2 the Streets (Disney) appears to have edged Fox's big budget Jumper on Thursday, although technically, it's a bit too close to call the race definitively. The urban dance sequel has averaged an estimated $2,500 per location on its opening day for what looks to be a $6.18 million total. The big-budget, sci-fi/adventure flick starring Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson meanwhile has grabbed an estimated $6.03 million Valentine's Thursday for a softer $1,775 or so per screen.

The unusual Valentine's Day kickoff to a 5-day weekend that includes President's Day has provided a perfect opportunity for Fool's Gold (Warner Bros.) to jump-start its second week as the Matthew McConaughey/Kate Hudson romantic comedy/action hybrid delivered another $3.42 million, good enough for a third-place finish. Gold's seven-day total is just shy of $30 million.

Two new releases occupy the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. The well-reviewed Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe (Universal) has gotten off to a disappointing start with an estimated $2.78 million, or $1,276 per location. Paramount's fantasy film The Spiderwick Chronicles rounds out the Top 5 with $2.21 million or so. With an expected surge in family business Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Spiderwick should finish no worse than third in the competitive five-day frame.

While I'm here, great numbers for Step Up 2, about expected for Jumper. Jumper should still win the weekend though. Bit disappointing for Definitely, Maybe-I woulda thought it was a better Valentine's day flick than Step Up 2. Very poor for Spiderwick even though it should have a big weekend bump-considering its price on FM, the hype that went with it & the fact that it had the INDINANA JONES 4 TRAILER attached to it.

Mase, Saw Spiderwick last night blown up on imax downtown Toronto. About 40 people in a theatre that holds close to a thousand. This movie was what I was hoping for when I went to Golden Compass, a family movie that felt magical, moved at break neck speed, and had me saying wow about every ten minutes. Not only that, it surprised me completely in two places in a "wow that's cool" way. The James Horner score, maybe his best since Titanic sure didn't hurt. This is the first movie I've seen in three weeks that had me falling in love with make believe and I'm telling everybody I know they have to see it. Fingers crossed, it finds the huge audience it deserves.

Thursday was the only day that "Definitely, Maybe" had a shot at winning and it took 4th place behind "Spiderwick" - a kids movie that barely had anyone go because of a school night.

I'll just say that it doesn't look for "Definitely, Not So Much". I really would be a little surprised if it finished in the top 5. I'm thinking "Roscoe Jenkins" might come back home for one more week.
